Industrial Hygiene
Industrial Hygiene is the recognition, evaluation, and control of hazardous exposures in the work environment. ESC’s Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH, American Board of Industrial Hygiene) directs this program and is involved in each project. Once the potential hazards are identified, an evaluation is formulated to test for the hazards. The hazards may include chemicals, particulates, or noise. Three other staff members serve as Industrial Hygienists and, typically, do the hands on testing and data collection. They complete the testing, interpret the data, and prepare the report which includes conclusions and recommendations. The CIH then meets with them, reviews and edits the report, and consults with the Client concerning the findings and recommendations. If controls are recommended and implemented, Environmental Safety Consultants retests to determine their effectiveness. Examples of common hazards are:
- Nuisance Dust or Particulates
- Hexavalent Chromium
- Silica
- Pesticides
- Solvents
- Welding Metals
- Excessive Carbon Monoxide
- Oxygen Deficiency
- Formaldehyde
- Noise
- Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
- Lead
- Noise
Environmental Safety Consultants’ CIH has served as an expert witness in over fifteen depositions, three jury trials, and one arbitration hearing. CIHs are recognized by the courts and allowed to testify as experts. That makes ESC’s work court-defensible. Nobody wants to end up in court, but if you do, you can rest a little easier with a Certified Industrial Hygienist on the case.
